Scouting tour notes (May 22-28)

Thursday, May 22
Verdi Club milonga. The space reopened with a new, fresher, lighter look and hardwood floors (likely maple). DJ Emilio did a fine job as always, and host Victor was as charming as ever.

Friday, May 23
Los Altos Milonga, with lesson on Milonga con traspie with Guillermo Garcia of Trio Garufa. The lesson was extremely basic, covering just the basic baldosa and side traspie step, with some work on the milonga rhythm beforehand. The host of this event, who is extremely gracious, is the same host as for the Sunnyvale Tarragon milonga. The food was excellent and came out in shifts so that it was more like a meal (appetizers of crackers and cheese, chips and dips; followed by fruit [big strawberries and pineapple], rolled roast beef and sliced red and yellow bell peppers; followed by dessert [ginger cake and chocolate chip cookies]. The floor was thin strip oak, but was oddly tacky-- not sticky enough for it to be a danger to dance on, but enough to be annoying and requiring a shoe change. DJ Emilio rocked the house of largely beginners.

Saturday, May 24
Sausalito Milonga @ Stage Dor with Gustavo & Jesica Hornos. As usual, maestros taught a fun, pretty sequence and broke it down for us in small simple pieces so that we could digest it easily and put it together and look fabulous in the end. Gustavo & Jesica are truly extraordinary teachers especially gifted in communication and skill. For both leaders and followers, the sequence began with three side extensions (followers right foot, leaders left foot). On the third extension, it is a full step. Leader does weight changes while follower gets pulled slightly off axis, as if for volcada, then she steps back left, back right, side left. She takes a side step right, then back side forward as if for molinete, then pivot while he paradas. She steps over with her right foot (with optional embellishment; the foot landing on the floor needs to be elegant, smooth and soft, not kerplunky), then he stops and leads her to back gancho of his left leg. She takes a forward step, leader offers his right leg, which follower ganchos with her right leg. Leader releases her gancho leg such that follower steps back, side, forward, as if for molinete, then he turns her and they step together (or he does an enrosque). The milonga was fun and the food plentiful and yummy, as usual.

Monday, May 26
TangoVida Ladies Technique class: Caminata & Adornos. We began with foot exercises to help strengthen our feet and ankles and to get us used to the idea/feeling of pushing off the floor with the feet to create movement side to side and forward and backward. We then practiced walking backward and forward, with much technical discussion on feet/leg movement. Maestra emphasized that the talus should be fully extended, so that the leg/ankle/foot are aligned straight. Maestro emphasized that this was a foot/ankle strength thing, on which all tango is built. For the adornos, we began with Ney's usual musicality exercise (clapping with chairs), and then walked with taps on the same beat exercises. One interesting variation that I had never been taught before was the air tap on the beat (so it was up high in the air, not down on the floor). As usual, it was a very good class, supplemented by good women's technique commentary from Ney Melo. I got to class early, and was pleased to see there was a good number of students in the earlier class (though it was imbalanced by too many followers). A new shipment of 60 Comme Il Faut shoes comes in tomorrow. Last class for the month is this Wednesday; after that Maestros are away in Europe teaching until June 23.

Wednesday, May 28
TangoVida Ladies Technique class: Molinete & Adornos. Much like Monday, we began with exercises to strengthen our feet and ankles. We also did more exercises to improve our muscle memory in both legs/feet with respect to doing some of the adornments, like the air tap, tapping to the side and back, and the caracia. We did just molinetes for an entire song, going in one direction, and another entire song going the other direction. For the adornos, we did the beat back on the left and right on the back step. We practiced walking in a small, tight circle doing taps on various beats and paying attention to how our bodies torqued and of course how our feet glided on the floor (with talus fully extended). From the earlier class, they did work on marching, so maestra incorporated that into our walks (on the quick steps). Great (challenging) class! New shipment of Comme Il Faut shoes are in and look great (lots of size 7). Ney and Jennifer are extremely gracious, offering yummy munchies (fruit, nuts, chocolate) and libations (coffee from pods, wine, water).

Tour notes (May 15-22)

Monday, May 19
CCSF movie night - Hula Girls. A fun time was had by the ~40 students, some dressed in Hula style, who came together to watch the flick and nosh on popcorn and candy. This was the first time Chelsea held a movie night, and I think it was a hit. Maybe next semester we could have another these, with a tango movie as the featured flick (like the Tango Lesson or Tango [with Carlos Rivarola]).

Tuesday, May 20
Ed & Nora Dinzelbacher lesson & practica @ Allegro. Nora & Ed taught a sequence: 8CB to 4, with Leader sacada to displace Follower's left leg at 5, Follower's right foot does small floor beat back to outside left of left foot, followed by 1/2 counterclockwise molinete, to small colgada when Follower is entirely on her right leg (so left leg goes side out, then forward back in). The hour-long practica afterwards was very helpful to etch the steps/movements in our bodies.

Scouting tour notes (May 8-14)

Saturday, May 10
Negracha & Diego Lanau's women's technique workshop @ La Pista. We did footwork/bodywork on the boleo, gancho, changes of intention (fast/slow), pivots, the parada/pasada/gancho, and stops. On adornos, we worked on taps and the foot trace. Maestros noted that the adornos should only be done if the leader gives you time to do it. Embellishments must be natural and free. It is important to continue to prepare your body through yoga and exercise. Maestros discussed the lead of the man in traditional versus nuevo (more democratic in nuevo). It was a good class.

Gustavo & Jesica Hornos class and milonga @ Stage Dor in Sausalito. The sequence taught involved the llevada (from the castellano verb llevar "to carry"). The llevada differs from the sacada or displacement because the leader steps with the follower's displaced leg, thus the carry. We linked three llevada steps, and learned a variation with the leader stepping with the follower in a different way, and then enganche-ing instead of stepping. Also, we did a sequence with the llevada step, followed by half molinete, followed by back ochos to the cross. Technical point: in the set-up for the enganche, the leader lifts the follower slightly so that she is put entirely on one foot and other leg is really free. Gustavo taught the lesson alone as Jesica was traveling. He is an excellent maestro with a very clear communication and detailed description of what leaders need to do. The milonga was a blast, as usual.

Sunday, May 11
Studio Gracia milonga and lesson taught by Negracha & Diego Lanau. The sequence taught was a clockwise molinete, then a back ocho, the immediately into a counterclockwise molinete. The milonga was great.

Wednesday, May 14
CCSF closing milonga and potluck. I had a blast. It was nice seeing all the classes represented, and all the photos of last weekend's performance.

Sunday, May 18
Cafe Cocomo milonga (Marcelo & Romina teach) or Studio Gracia milonga.

Monday, May 19
CCSF movie night (Hula Girls), followed by La Cumparsita milonga (Pier & Daniel teach the lesson on Volcadas).

Scouting tour notes - April 30 - May 7

Wednesday, April 30
CCSF classes - semester review. In Follower's technique, we reviewed the floor exercises we learned to increase abdominal strength and torquing range of motion/disassociation. We also worked on rhythm and speed in our walking/embellishing exercises across the floor. Maestra noted that the best adornos are not planned and just come naturally when you/your feet really let go and feel the music. In Advanced, we reviewed much of what we learned in the beginning of the semester, namely the cadena (both sides) and molinete resolving into low back boleo and front contra boleo.

Sunday, May 4
Women's Technique workshop with Negracha and Diego Lanau @ La Pista. We began with a balance exercise, slowly walking across the floor, then raising our leg straight up and forward, then bringing it in and back down in a caracia. Focus was on balance, control, and quality of movement. Next, a lead/follow exercise without using our hands just focusing on connecting with our eyes and leading with our bodies. Next, we worked on molinetes, with the focus of really turning our hips, especially on the back step. We did the same with forward ochos and back ochos. We ended with 8CB embellishments -- beat back before 3 (movement should be quick and sharp); after 5 (cross) right foot tap on pivot on cross of spiral front cross out. Negracha and Diego emphasized dancing on the whole foot, with heel down, for balance and stability/groundedness (saying that leaders do not dance on their toes with heels up all the time, and followers shouldn't either [except during pivots]).

Monday, May 5
La Cumparsita Milonga @ Slovenian Hall. Negracha and Diego taught the extremely well-attended lesson, which were a couple of sequences: 8CB to 5 (cross), then ocho cortado. 8CB to 5 (cross), then Follower moinete with leader sacada, to ocho cortado. They did two beautiful demos -- of milonga and of tango (to Canaro's Poema). They again emphasized dancing on the whole foot for followers.

Tuesday, May 6
Ladies Technique @ TangoVida (Ney Melo & Jennifer Bratt's new studio, 1120 Pacific @ Taylor). I couldn't resist checking out this new studio in my old 'hood, and I am glad I did. This was a truly excellent class; what a huge blessing for the SF Bay Area community to have such a gifted women's technique maestra like Jennifer Bratt. We began with foot exercises to increase strength, articulation and expression. We then worked on front and back ochos; Jennifer emphasized that the movement should be continual and smooth (not jerky or stopped at points); that the foot that comes around should be very pointed; and that the step is a real step, with heel to the ground (not all on the ball of the foot -- though heel must obviously be lifted at pivot). We worked on embellishing the ocho with front and back tucks, as well as taping. It's a nice sized space with mirrors on one side of the room; sustainable bamboo floor; art nouveau-inspired decor; Comme Il Faut and MalevaMan shoe boutique; complimentary coffee from pods and fortune cookies; difficult street parking; pay parking lots and Hyde St. cable car nearby. Prices: $60 per class series; $120 for 2 class series; $150 unlimited monthly pass (a bargain!); $20 drop in; Visa and MasterCard accepted. First class is free, so no excuse not to check it out. The studio is just starting up, so classes are still small; attending now gets you a lot of individual attention. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. www.studiotangovida.com

Thursday, May 8 Maybe the Mariposa Tango Club milonga.

Friday, May 9 Maybe either Downtown Palo Alto milonga or Monte Cristo.

Saturday, May 10 Negracha & Diego women's technique workshop @ La Pista.

Sunday, May 11 Studio Gracia milonga. Negracha & Diego teach.

Monday, May 12 - La Cumparsita milonga @ Slovenian Hall. Last chance to get your Negracha & Diego fix before they leave.

Wednesday, May 14. Last day of CCSF AT classes; neat potluck (no sloppy joes) milonga 6:30-9:30 p.m.

Mark your calendars:
Monday, June 2 fundraiser milonga @ La Cumparsita @ Slovenian Hall. Tango ConFusion has been invited to participate at the Queer Tango Festival in BsAs later this year. This fundraiser is for the airfare for the 6 ladies in the group. Please plan on joining, either with a big fat checkbook, or lots of miles you can donate to the cause. Chelsea Eng teaches the lesson, so here's a chance for all you non-CCSFers to see what you are missing (and maybe inspire you to sign up for her classes or privates).
